Texas soldier and Marine killed in Afghanistan

The Department of Defense on Wednesday announced the deaths of two Texans who were fighting in Afghanistan.

Matthew Dwight Ogden, a 33-year-old Army infantry gunner, had joined the military hoping for a new start in life, his father, Michael Ogden, said in a story in the Corpus Christi Caller- Times. He was one of three soldiers whose names were released Wednesday who died Monday in Nerkh, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle.

Ogden was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry) in Fort Drum, N.Y.

The Defense Department also announced the death of a Marine from Austin. Lance Cpl. Matthew G. Reza, 27, was killed Sunday in a non-hostile incident in Khandahar province. The incident is under investigation.

He was assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 31, Marine Aircraft Group 31, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Air Station in Beaufort, S.C.
