RAYMONDVILLE - Richard Robert Smith, better known as Dick Smith, died at the age of 89 at Valley Baptist Medical Center on January 3, 2013 after a short illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Elva Louise Smith; his parents; four sisters and one grandson.

Dick is survived by his son, Richard L. (Yvonne) Smith and daughter, Sue (Robert) Hoot, all of Raymondville; brother, Dub Smith, four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Dick served in the Army Air Corp during World War II as a machinist and engine mechanic working on B29s and B24s attaining the rank of corporal. In his younger years he was known for his mechanical skills and his hot rodding; later he found his true love, selling John Deere tractors and equipment in Willacy County, from which he retired.

Graveside services were held Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. in the Monte Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, TX with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 205 and V.F.W. Post 2410.

Honored to serve as pallbearers were Bob Rhodes, Jimmy Riggan, David Shewmaker, Troy Shewmaker, Bobby Clark and Boscoe Cole.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Duddlesten Funeral Home.
