ELEANOR BARKHURST FLOYD

HARLINGEN, TX - Eleanor Barkhurst Floyd passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at Spears Home after a short illness.

Eleanor was born on December 16, 1917 to William Longstreth and Alenza Ludman Barkhurst in Zanesville, Ohio. In 1929 Eleanor made her first trip to the Rio Grande Valley on a land excursion party with family. In 1940, while visiting her sister, Elizabeth Humphrey in Raymondville, Eleanor met Murray Vernon Floyd. They were married in Zanesville, Ohio three months later. Eleanor and Murray resided in Raymondville, until Murray’s death in January, 1987. Soon thereafter, Eleanor moved to Harlingen where she resided until 2012 when she relocated again to Austin.

Eleanor is survived by two children, Maureen Floyd Parce (Fred) of Harlingen and William Murray Floyd (Sue) ofAustin, four grandchildren, Susanne Parce Hiegel (Rob) of Houston, Frederick Murray Parce (Chassidy) of Houston, William Murray Floyd Jr. (Jenny) of Fort Worth and Christopher Larkin Floyd of Houston; four great-grandchildren, Ashlyn Maureen Hiegel, Ryan James Hiegel, Frederick Charles Parce and Macy Alenza Parce, all of Houston; niece Phyllis Humphrey Hutchins of McAllen; great-nieces, Charlotte Roberts DeWitt of Raymondville and Kathleene Hutchins Swanberg of Harlingen.

Eleanor was an accomplished violinist and played on a weekly radio program in Zanesville during her teenage years.

During high school, Eleanor developed a life-long passion for playing bridge. This lead to many lasting friendships over the years. Eleanor loved to travel and her adventurous spirit took her to many places throughout North America and Europe. Murray always said Eleanor’s middle name was Go.

Family and friends will gather at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 for visitation at Duddlesten Funeral Home.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the Duddlesten Funeral Home Chapel, with interment to follow in the Raymondville Memorial Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers are Eleanor’s grandsons, Freddie Parce, Will Floyd, Chris Floyd and Rob Hiegel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rio Grande Children’s Home, 3780 N. Bentsen Palm Dr., Mission, TX 78574 or a charity of your choice.

The family wished to extend its sincere thanks to the wonderful nurses and caregivers at Valley Baptist Medical Center, Cardiac Unit, Golden Palms and the Spears House.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Duddlesten Funeral Home, 604 W. Hidalgo, Raymondville, TX.
