Behind the Badge

Catching Up
By Larry G. Spence

We alluded to May being a busy month a few weeks back and so far it's lived up to its' reputation. Having just returned from a combined Texas Border Sheriffs and Southwestern Border Sheriffs meeting in late April, it's been non stop ever since. The meeting in Del Rio was a good one with a lot of information shared by several good speakers. Sheri ff Harold Eavenson of Rockwall County Texas currently 3rd Vice President of the National Sheriffs Association, introduced NSA's new Executive Director, Jonathan Thompson, who gave a very informative presentation.

We returned home in time to prepare for National Day of Prayer and Mothers' Day. The National Day of Prayer observances were both well attended. In Raymondville people gathered at the American Legion Post 390, and In Lyford later that day, people gathered at the football stadium. Both programs were well received by the public.

Mother's Day has come and gone and I hope yours was a special one as it should be. I completely forgot about it while writing last week's column and trying to beat a deadline. I was so caught up in trying to get the information out about domestic violence, that I completely forgot to write a Mothers' Day column. This week we are in National Police Week, with May 15th being Police Memorial Day. We held a fundraiser to send Martha Martinez, the wife of Sgt. Alex Martinez, and her children to Washington D.C. so they could be there for her husband and their father being honored on the National Memorial Wall. Unfortunately we couldn't get arrangements to escort her so a deputy from Harris County will be her escort. We had a lot of things go haywire in trying to make those arrangements, from the escort deputy ending up in the hospital, to another unable to get a hotel room closer than 100 miles away. We will also hold a Police Memorial Day ceremony this Friday in front of the Chamber of Commerce, across from the High School in the morning. More details will be available through the chamber. Please come out and join us as we honor the fallen officers of this past year .

We are not halfway through the month yet but we still have a lot to do this month. Graduations will be here soon as well as the observance of Memorial Day. Phase one of the elections are over but there are some runoffs, so don't forget to go out and support your favorite candidate. In the meantime, stay dry and stay safe. See you in church. The only thing missing is u.
