Houston police with arm tattoos OK for short-sleeved shirts

HOUSTON (AP) Houston police Chief Art Acevedo plans to change policy and let officers with tattoos on their arms wear short-sleeved shirts.

The Houston Chronicle reported Thursday that Acevedo, who was hired in November, says he'll implement the change before summer. The ex-Austin police chief says employee comfort is important, noting the hot environment in Houston.

Current Houston police policy says no officer can have tattoos and/or body art that cannot be covered by official uniform and/ or plainclothes attire.

The updated policy, similar to what Acevedo implemented in Austin, will still forbid tattoos on an officer's hands, neck or face, and any racially discriminatory or otherwise offensive tattoos.

Acevedo says police professionalism is about conduct, service and results not a tattoo on an arm or leg.
