Longtime educator and commissioner dies


Eziquiel “Zeke” Cavazos Eziquiel “Zeke” Cavazos Raymondville City Commissioner Eziquiel “Zeke” Cavazos has died.

A longtime teacher, city official, volunteer firefighter and musician, Cavazos was a music teacher at Raymondville and, most recently, at Lasara, said his sister, Louisa Alaniz.

He is also survived by sisters Margaret Gonzalez, Doris Solis and Anita Martinez, Alaniz said.

He taught music at L.C. Smith Elementary and was principal of Myra Green Junior High School in Raymondville. He was an art teacher in the Lasara school district.

An older brother, Urbano Cavazos, died in 1964 in a cartrain accident on the outskirts of Raymondville. He was an altar boy, traveling with a priest and a chauffeur to help conduct Mass at Norias, Alaniz said.

A graduate of Texas A&I University, Kingsville, he had a master’s degree in education, Alaniz said.

He played the guitar, piano and saxophone.

Cavazos had just won reelection to his seat on the city commission in May, his sister said.

He had many friends and hundreds of pictures of him with friends have been posted on Facebook, she said of her brother. Eziquiel “Zeke” Cavazos
