Saturday’s Raymondville special election resulted in a need to hold a runoff election between Edward Gonzales and Irene Moreno Cavazos.

Four candidates hoped to win the seat vacated by the death of Ezequiel “Zeke” Cavazos.

Gonzales received 330 total votes (including 233 early votes) and Cavazos received 250 total votes (including 151 early votes).

Cristina Moreno Correa receive 203 total votes (127 early votes).

Joel Robles received 27 votes (including 21 early votes).

Willacy County Elections Administrator Mary Hope Barrera and Raymondville City Manager Eleazar “Yogi” both said they will have to consult with the Texas Secretary of State’s Election Division before the runoff election can be scheduled.

Garcia said votes must be canvassed first and that will be done before next Tuesday’s city commission meeting and the date for the runoff will likely be set at that meeting after the canvassing is complete.

The runoff date will be set by city commissioners, after Garcia consults with the Secretary of States’ office.
