Willacy commissioners OK CDBG application

Willacy County commissioners on Friday authorized a consultant to apply for up to $275,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds. The grant would be part of the 2019-2020 State of Texas budget cycle.

If approved for a grant, the county will have to pay a 20 percent “local match” share of the total project, which will also include costs for engineering work.

Presently, the county is involved in a $318,615 project for street paving, drainage, curb and gutter work in various precincts in unincorporated areas.

County projects must be in inhabited areas, or in unincorporated towns such as Sebastian and Lasara, which are considered colonias.

Incorporated cities such as Raymondville, Lyford and San Perlita also can get CDBG grants for projects but they do their own separate applications for funding, Guerra said.

In the new (2019-2020) application, projects selected are in Precinct 1 (Lasara), Precinct 2 (La Rosita) and Precinct 4 (Sebastian).

In the current project, which is about to start, work will be done in Precinct 1 (Lasara), Precinct 2 (Citation Road) and Precinct 3 (Willacy County Housing Authority).

Engineering work for the current project was done by Hanson Engineering of Brownsville. Paving work is being done by Diament mond Industries LLC of Santa Rosa.

When being considered for funding, projects are scored by state officials on a point system and must be in areas where “lowto moderate-income” families live, County Judge Aurelio “Keter” Guerra said.

The new application for funding will be considered by state officials and funding will be announced later if approved.
