Corn syrup in beer: It’s for fermenting, not as a sweetener

NEW YORK (AP) - Bud Light is touting that it doesn’t use corn syrup, but that doesn’t make it nutritionally much different from its competitors.

The best-selling beer in the U.S. ran a Super Bowl ad on Sunday night that mocked rival beers Miller Lite and Coors Light for using the sweetener. Bud Light uses rice instead.

Starches and sweeteners can be used in the fermenting process to make beers, even if little remains in the end product. In fact, 12-ounce cans of Bud Light and Miller Lite both list zero grams of sugar content.

A Bud Light representative says different recipes create different flavors, and that it’s up to consumers to decide which beer is right for them.

Other brewers say it doesn’t matter much, since starches and sweeteners all generally serve the same purpose for light beers.
