A woman who suffered severe burns from a cooking accident at a Raymondville area home last week has died, a Willacy County Sheriff’s Department spokesman said.

Alma Delia Gomez, 49, spilled burning cooking oil on herself while preparing tacos for her husband, said Detective Sgt. Andrew Maldonado, who investigated the accident.

The accident occurred March 5 and she was transported to Harlingen by Willacy County Emergency Medical Service ambulance and then airlifted to a military hospital burn unit in San Antonio, EMS Director Frank Torres said.

Maldonado identified the burn victim and said she died Thursday night.

Gomez lived in the Chapa Subdivision near the “S-curve” on Highway 186 on the western outskirts of Raymondville, Maldonado said.

“It was an accident, there was no foul play,” he said.
