U.S. Border Patrol has confirmed the agency is investigating an incident in which a boat carrying illegal aliens and possible contraband was seized by the U.S. Coast Guard at Baffin Bay.

A Border Patrol spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday the incident took place and said an investigation is underway.

“On March 6, 2019, U.S. Border Patrol agents assigned to the Kingsville Border Patrol Station responded to a report of alien smuggling via watercraft. Agents determined some of the subjects on board were illegal aliens and they were taken into custody,” said Dustin D. Araujo, Special Operations Supervisor, Communications Branch, Rio Grande Valley Sector Headquarters, Edinburg.

A Coast Guard spokeswoman said there were a total of seven people on board the boat.

The two agencies would not comment on a report received by the Raymondville Chronicle that the boat originated its trip in Port Mansfield and was attempting to transport illegal aliens and drug contraband around the Sarita checkpoint.

Spokespersons for the two agencies also would not comment on a report the boat had recently been purchased from a Willacy County businessman.
